Old Melbourne Gaol

We stayed in Melbourne for a week and started out at the Old Melbourne Gaol. I’m fascinated with the history of Ned Kelly. Here I got to see where he lived out his last days.

We were given a false prison identity and searched before being locked in the cells in the Old Melbourne Watchhouse. After being sentenced you were sent to the Gaol from here.

This is what the Old Melbourne Gaol looks like when you enter. It has three levels, which included the hanging section.

We went into the cell that Ned Kelly was held in. The cells were very small with only a thin mattress and blanket on the floor to sleep on.

After Ned Kelly was hanged a Phrenologist ‘death mask’ was made of his shaven head. Phrenology was used in the 19th century to determine criminal behaviour.

I tried on some replica Ned Kelly armour. It was very heavy.

Jacob tried some on too.
