Severs Beach - Ben Boyds National Park

This is me at Severs beach in Ben Boyds National Park, just north of Eden. This was a beautiful soft white sandy cove with crystal clear water. We were fortunate to have it all to ourselves.

I love Soldier Crabs, so I was very excited to find this one. Also, I was very surprised because I thought they were mainly in QLD.

Mum showed me how to tell the difference between a male and a female crab but when I turned this one over you could see all her eggs. We had a quick look then put her back where I had found her. How exciting!

Looking at the photo up close, we noticed white balls mixed in with the eggs. We researched what they were and decided they could be eggs already hatched. We didn’t find a lot on the internet for Soldier Crab eggs, but going by some other crabs, it seems that she waits until they are all hatched before dropping them off.

One other special thing about Severs Beach was the Aboriginal shell middens there to look at. It was fenced off and sandbagged to help protect and preserve the historical site. I’ve read about them in books but haven’t seen one before. This one was over 3500 years old.
