Penguins at Burnie

We didn’t know there were Penguins here at Burnie, so again it was a nice surprise. It is free to go to the viewing areas right on the beach, which is closed off by a fence and boardwalk. The Penguins are right there at your feet.

This Little Penguin is moulting and growing new feathers. The home he lives in is a man made one out of concrete.

All the chicks are gone for the season but you can still see a few Penguins coming in to moult. I was hoping to see them coming in along the beach, it’s very cute and fun to see. When a group of Penguins come in from the water together, it’s called a raft.

This is the beach where they come in. As you can see it’s mostly rocks. They jump along this section to get to their burrows.

This is a burrow which has been made naturally by the penguins. No Penguins were in it though.

I read a book about Penguins, which said when using or occupying a nest, the Penguin will mark the outside with poo. It’s called White Penguin Paint. I was hoping to see some after I read that.
