Mt Gambier

Mt Gambier was our next stop with extinct volcanoes to explore and the beautiful Blue Lake.

A bee hive nested in the Umpherston sinkhole in the main street of Mt Gambier. It’s now turned into a garden at day and an Indigenous lighting show at night.

The visitors discovery centre had some fossils on display. This is Jacobs favourite, an extinct short faced kangaroo, called Simosthenurus occidentalis. It is estimated to have lived between 50,000 and 500,000 years ago.

Mt Gambier Blue Lake crater changes colour every year but experts are unsure why.

This rim is all that is left of one of the volcanoes of Mt Gambier. We walked along here collecting samples of black basalt lava and scoria.

Jacob explaining his theories on how the volcano exploded ejecting a lava bomb. We collected some interesting pieces and cleaned them.
