Seahorse World

Another special day, this time a tour at Seahorse World. Great touch tanks to explore in; we could have easily stayed longer.

This photo is one of many tanks with hundreds of seahorses in them. They usually hook their tails around seaweed, but here they are latching onto each other. Big Bellied Seahorse are found all around the southern Australian coastline and Tasmania.

I'm looking at tiny hatchlings in the hatchery tanks.

Here we are dipping in the touch tanks. Jacob and I are looking at huge Hermit Crabs.

Look at the size of this one. Very healthy life he has had.

Dad and I found this beautiful seastar. I don't think I've seen one with these markings and colours before.

Jacob found a Seacucumber. He had not seen one or felt one before, so he was really fascinated with it.

I picked up a small seahorse. It felt unusual, hard to describe and not at all what I thought they would.

I also wanted to feel this tiny Puffer Fish. He was so cute.

This beautiful crab is called a Tasmanian Giant Crab. It's the worlds second largest crab after the Japanese Spider Crab. He weighs about 14 kg and is 40cm wide. The claw on him is gigantic.

Weedy Seadragons are about 45 cm in length. The largest seadragon in this tank is a male. He was collected from the wild while pregnant (males give birth). They successfully raised five offspring, shown here.

Here is our wombat. He came out a bit earlier tonight with still enough sunlight to take a photo.

He didn't like us getting too close. Mum liked this photo capturing his back foot as he walked away.

We found heaps of wombat burrows clustered in one place. I counted twelve, but not all are being used.
