Nyroca Scout Camp

On Easter weekend we stumbled upon a hidden camp ground used for scouts. This was my favourite camping ground so far. Here we collected eggs, enjoyed fresh honey from the hives, Yabbies from the creek, fed the Goats and Alpaca, and at night warmed ourselves by a huge communal campfire.

Collecting the eggs from the chicken pen. Malcolm, the caretaker, let us keep some to eat.

Our first experience at yabbying. I had a Yabby as a pet once, but these ones I’m going to enjoy eating.

We caught 15 good sized Yabbies, but one in particular was gigantic. We called him Monster.

Here is Monster; he is huge. We did some nature journalling about him before we cooked him.

Jacob observed the Yabbies for a long time and realised they couldn’t move their claws backwards. He then had the confidence to pick up a Yabby for the first time, knowing if he put his finger at the back they couldn’t pinch him. He was really excited about his discovery and we were all surprised that he did it.

Jacob’s new found confidence encouraged me to try holding Monster. I’ve held Yabbies before but only small ones. He truly is huge; can’t wait to taste him.

Here they are, cooked up and ready to eat. Monster is on top and the first for me to taste. I eat prawns and love them; Mum says Yabbies are even better.

Jacob collecting different rocks, pretending they are Aboriginal stone tools. He is having fun chopping and grinding bark with them.
