New Beach

We have moved on from Shark Bay and are heading towards Exmouth. Here we stopped for an overnight stay at a free camp called New Beach. We loved it so much we stayed for an extra night.

We camped 20m from this beautiful waveless and crystal clear beach. We could walk 100m out in the water and it was still only knee high. I found 6 large vertebrae bones in the water right here where I am standing.

A large crab we found on one of our walks exploring amongst the mangroves.

We also discovered more bones, this time in the ground around the mangrove root systems. Very exciting.

The further down from the beach, and deeper into the mangroves we went, we found more and more bones caught in the mud. Not sure what species this belongs to yet.

Jacob discovered this huge partial bone plate from a turtle, probably a Loggerhead Turtle.

We were heading to the van as it’s almost dark when Dad stubbed his foot on something hidden under the seagrass. Mum had just found some bones under the grass not far from that spot so Dad dug and found this.

We were all so excited, even more so when we took it into the water to wash off. Once the seagrass was washed off, it revealed a Dugong skull.

Jacob noticed it had it’s teeth, including a front tusk which means it was a male.
